“I am the Lord your God. I take hold of your right hand. I say to you, ‘Do not be afraid. I will help you.'” – Isaiah 41:13
That’s a powerful image, isn’t it? The Creator of all things reaching down and taking hold of you, like a father holding his little child’s hand, promising security and safety and assistance… promising a Refuge. It happens to be the anchor verse for our Children this Sunday as they look at Moses’ early years and how he was protected by God. Hope the kids can join us this Sunday at 10am.
Insofar as “helping” us, the adults are going to take a look at Exodus 31:12-17 and what appears to be a narrative interrupt in the tabernacle story. God calls a time out of sorts, or at least a reminder of the Sabbath, and a call to rest (not just in general, but in the Lord). And that’s part of the point we’ll look at… that even though God calls us to dynamic action, he also reminds us of the dual nature of regular rest, and in fact a rest that centers on Him (and hopefully centers US on Him. I also promise to challenge ALL of us to consider doing something VERY counter-cultural, and for many of us counter-intuitive, so I hope we’ll have a full house!
Also, as we mentioned Sunday, we’re hosting another FOOD DRIVE for the Nourishing Network! Do some shopping this weekend for single-serving items suitable for schoolkids and bring them Sunday. If financial donations are easier, you can also contribute to the Nourishing Network here.
Before service, we’ll continue Refuge 101 and look at the basics of Reformed theology and our church for our newer attendees and those interested in becoming members, so perhaps we’ll see some of you early for coffee and conversation. Fall is JUST getting started and it’s a great time to reconnect, recommit, and retrofit our lives… so rest up and we’ll see you Sunday.
Grace and peace,
